The experience I describe here was paid professional work. I contributed content to a humanitarian campaign associated with UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, as part of a collective effort involving marketing, creative development, production and delivery teams.
Writing for charities can be a paid professional role or a voluntary contribution with an agreed scope. Specialized content requires research, coordination, time and review. Recognizing that work supports its quality and continuity.
The communications challenge
Within the cooperation between Qatar Charity and UNHCR, the institutional abbreviation QC4HCR was being used for the initiative. I felt that the public also needed a name they could easily understand and engage with, one that explained the humanitarian purpose of taking part.
I proposed the Arabic name “لأجل الإنسان” (For Humanity), with “4Humanity” as its English form. The messaging centered on solidarity with people forced to flee their homes. The aim was to help the audience quickly understand whom we were supporting and why, and to give them a clear human connection to the campaign.
My contribution to the content
I worked with the team on marketing and narrative content and helped develop a visual treatment that brought people’s experiences of displacement and their needs closer to the audience. The work also involved coordinating messages and formats so that the campaign was coherent across publishing channels.
Khaled Khalifa welcomed the idea, and I received a certificate of appreciation for my contribution. I remember the experience as an example of what a team with different skills can achieve around a defined humanitarian purpose.
What the published figures show
According to Qatar Charity’s report on the initiative launched with UNHCR in May 2019, the urgent appeal raised approximately QAR 25 million during two hours of live broadcasting. The initiative aimed to assist more than 300,000 people. That figure was an announced target; establishing how many people actually received assistance would require implementation reporting. [1]
The fundraising result reflected a shared effort involving the institutional partnership, supporters’ trust, media coverage and the teams involved. The contribution of the name or copy cannot be isolated and credited with the full amount raised.
What I learned
I learned that a clear name makes it easier to begin a conversation with the public, and that a message needs reliable detail about the need and the proposed response. A successful appeal also creates a responsibility to follow delivery and tell supporters what happened.
For volunteer writing, the organization and writer should agree on the purpose, available information, review process and time required. This gives the writer a useful way to contribute and helps the organization use the work within a clear arrangement that respects both parties.
